Mastering Stick (MMA) Welding with IGBT Technology
Inverter welding machines have completely revolutionized metal fabrication in Pakistan. Unlike ancient 40kg copper transformers that tripped circuit breakers, modern IGBT inverter welders weigh under 6kg, plug into standard 15A wall outlets, and deliver buttery-smooth DC arc stability.
1. Selecting the Right Welding Rod (Electrode)
For mild steel fabrication, gates, grills, and structural tubing, two main electrode types are used across Pakistan:
- E6013 (Rutile): The universal favorite. Starts arcs effortlessly, produces minimal spatter, works with dirty or lightly rusted steel, and the slag peels off like potato skins. Perfect for sheets and general square pipes.
- E7018 (Basic Low-Hydrogen): Used for high-strength structural fabrication, thick trailer chassis, and pressure vessels. Produces ductile, crack-resistant welds but requires dry storage.
2. Amperage Quick Reference Table
- 2.0mm Rod (Gauge 14): 45 - 70 Amps (Ideal for thin 1.2mm - 1.5mm square pipes)
- 2.5mm Rod (Gauge 12): 65 - 95 Amps (The most versatile all-around workshop setting)
- 3.2mm Rod (Gauge 10): 95 - 135 Amps (Heavy angle iron, channels, and plates)
π‘ Arc Strike Technique: Don't stab the electrode directly downward into the metalβit will weld itself stuck. Instead, strike it gently like striking a matchstick across a matchbox. Once the bright arc ignites, lift it 2mm to 3mm and maintain a consistent travel speed.
